Lofts are generally built from former industrial buildings. Lofts can have either commercial or residential purposes. Residential lofts can be loft apartments or loft condominiums. Loft conversions have played a major part in urban renewal initiatives turning abandoned factories and warehouses into a great source of property tax generation for the municipality. The first loft conversion where large open studios spaces primarily uses by artists living work space. Today loft are highly sought after for their openness and high ceilings.

The first residential loft conversions offering residential Boston homes in Boston was the Piano Craft Guild located in Boston beautiful South End at the corner of Tremont Street and Massachusetts Avenue. A genuine loft referred to as a “Hard Lofts” is a renovation of a former industrial building with combination of the old and the new. In many Hard Loft buildings no two units resemble eachother. Most of these lofts have brick walls and large windows. However in recent years many new developments have been built attempting to resemble genuine lofts do to the demand, these form of lofts are referred to as “Soft Lofts” in the real estate industry.
